Background: NFkB is constitutively raised in cases of cervical cancer, however not all the cases of HSIL or LSIL show NFkB expression. While HPV positivity accounts for about 90% cervical cancer cases in India, the opposite is not true. Could HPV positivity be correlated with NFkB expression in cervical cancer smears vis-à-vis grade of the disease, was the aim of the present study.

Methods: 20 cases each of LSIL, HSIL, CaCx and controls were examined for HR HPV positivity by using PCR. NFkB expression in cervical smears was determined by IHC using NFkB p65 SC 8008 from Santa Cruz Biotechnology USA.

Results: NFkB positive expression in cervical cancer was seen in both HPV positive and negative LSIL (7/20) and HSIL (25/40) cases while all the cases of cervical cancer (20/20) showed NFkB positivity. HPV positivity was seen in 26% LSIL, 80% HSIL, and 88% of frank cancer.

Conclusions: NFkB expression in cervical cancer smears through IHC is demonstrated in excellent manner and an expression of both - HPV positivity and NFkB in cases with LSIL and HSIL (Moderate & Severe Dysplasia) appears to identify the sub- group that may have potential to progress to high- grade disease/ Ca Cervix. Long term studies are suggested.
